Meta has not complied with subpoenas for information on suppressing speech.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is considering holding Mark Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress for withholding internal communications discussing Meta’s censorship process. Zuckerberg was one of five major tech leaders that received subpoenas from the committee in February, requiring the companies to turn over “documents and communications relating to the federal government’s reported collusion with Big Tech to suppress free speech,” the committee said in their request.
Chairman Jordan wrote to Meta as a follow-up in May, stating, “Meta’s rolling productions to date have not included material the Committee knows is, or has reason to believe may be, in the company’s possession and that is responsive to the subpoena […] If Meta fails to comply in full with the subpoena’s demands, the Committee may be forced to consider the use of one or more enforcement mechanisms.“
While Meta has turned over 50,000 pages of documents in response to the committee’s request, they have not included the internal communications specifically requested by the House committee.
Chairman Jordan also wrote to Zuckerberg this week regarding the new Threads platform. He stated, “Given that Meta has censored First Amendment-protected speech as a result of government agencies’ requests and demands in the past, the Committee is concerned about potential First Amendment violations that have occurred or will occur on the Threads platform.“
